    It is useful for searching fish schools at cruising speed. The width of the sounder display can be selected between standard (approx. 20 mm) and wide (approx. 40 mm). The sounder setup menu appears. See Figure 1-9. This display is useful for comparing the same picture with two different sounding frequencies. It works as follows. It jumps to one step shallower range when bottom echoes reach a half way point of the full scale from top and to one step deeper range when they come to the lower edge of scale. CRUISING is for tracking the bottom, and FISHING is for searching fish schools. CRUISING uses a higher clutter rejection setting than FISHING therefore it is not recommended for fish detection - weak fish echoes may be erased by the clutter suppression circuit. The basic range can be thought of as providing a “window” into the water column and range shifting as moving the “window” to the desired depth. Press the soft key RETURN to finish.     Enter current longitude. It does this by utilizing the fact that an ultrasonic wave transmitted through water travels at a nearly constant speed of 4800 feet (1500 meters) per second. When a sound wave strikes an underwater object such as fish or sea bottom, part of the sound wave is reflected back toward the source (transducer). Thus by calculating the time difference between the transmission of a sound wave and the reception of the reflected sound wave, the depth to the object can be determined. Transmitter power is sent to the transducer as a short pulse of electrical energy. The electrical signal produced by the transmitter is converted into an ultrasonic signal by the transducer and transmitted into the water. Any returning signals from intervening objects (such as a fish school) are received by the transducer and converted into an electrical signal. The signals are then amplified in the amplifier section, and finally, displayed on screen. Each line represents a snapshot of what has occurred beneath the boat. A series of snapshots are accumulated side by side across the screen, and the resulting contours of the bottom and fish between the bottom and surface are displayed. To switch between these pictures, do the following: The lower the frequency of the pulse, the wider the detection area. Therefore, the 50 kHz frequency is useful for general detection and judging bottom condition. Therefore, the 200 kHz frequency is ideal for detailed observation of fish school. Press the soft key RETURN to close the window. The length of the segment is equal to one division of the depth scale. A bottom displayed with a short echo tail usually means it is a soft, sandy bottom. A long echo tail means a hard bottom. This mode is useful for bottom discrimination. It may be turned on in the DISPLAY SETUP2 menu. For further details see “ZOOM MARKER” on page 9-4. It is useful for estimating the kind of fish school and seabed composition.

    The hollow inverted triangle shows the bearing to destination waypoint. When own ship’s course is changed, the hollow inverted triangle moves with course change. Using Figure 3- 13 as an example, you would steer right by 000.02 nautical miles to return to course. When this mark is out of range of the XTE scale, the mark color changes from black to yellow. The range of the XTE scale can be set as shown below (default: 0.5 nm). To cancel entry, press the soft key CANCEL.     When selecting a picture advance speed, keep in mind that a fast advance speed will expand the size of the fish school horizontally on the screen and a slow advance speed will contract it. STOP freezes the display and it is convenient for observing an echo. To activate the bottom alarm the depth must be displayed. The WITHIN alarm sounds when the water temperature is within the range set; the WITHOUT alarm sounds when the water temperature is higher or lower than the range set. This alarm requires water temperature data. The offending alarm is displayed in red in the ALARM INFORMATION window. Press the soft key CLEAR ALARM to erase the alarm indication. The alarm icon remains displayed in red until all violated alarms have been acknowledged. The size of the fish school can be ascertained from the density of the display. This is because the echo travels between the bottom and the surface twice or more in shallow depths. The harder the bottom, the wider the trace. If the gain is set to show only a single bottom echo on mud, a rocky bottom will show a second or third bottom return. The range should be chosen so the first and second bottom echoes are displayed when bottom hardness is being determined. As surface turbulence is acoustically equivalent to running into a brick wall, the bottom echo will be displayed intermittently. Similar noise sometimes appears when a water temperature difference (thermocline) exists. Different species of fish tend to prefer different temperature zones, so the thermocline may be useful to help identify target fish. 200 kHz tends to show shallow thermoclines better than 50 kHz. This also occurs when the boat makes a quick turn or reverses movement. Lowering the picture advance speed may reduce the interruption. However, reconsideration of the transducer installation may be necessary if the interruption occurs frequently. To change the mode, use the presentation mode selection soft key, which is the 3rd soft key from the top.

    North (zero degree) is at the top of the display and own ship is at the center of the screen. Own ship marker is a filled circle. This mode is useful for long-range navigation. When destination is set it is at the top of the screen, the north mark appears at the upper left side of the screen and points to north. Afilled triangle marks own ship’s position. The course or heading is at the top of screen at the moment the course-up mode is selected.Operate the cursor pad to shift the cursor. The cursor moves in the direction of the arrow or diagonal pressed on the cursor pad. Cursor position is displayed in latitude and longitude or Loran or Decca TDs (depending on menu setting) at the top of the plotter display when the cursor is on. The screen shifts in the direction opposite of cursor location. ZOOM IN expands the chart; ZOOM OUT shrinks it. See Table 3-1. When you insert a suitable mini chart card in the slot and your boat is near land, a chart appears. Insert the proper card and select a suitable chart scale. Chart icons appear to help you select a suitable chart scale. Table 3-1 shows the chart icons and their meanings. Press the soft key ZOOM IN to adjust chart scale. Press the soft key ZOOM OUT to adjust chart scale. These frames are called indices and they show you what parts of the chart can be enlarged in the current picture range. The areas circumscribed with smaller frames can be enlarged, but the area enclosed by the largest frame cannot. Simply place the cursor on the lighthouse or buoy mark. The services available appear at the top of the display. Selected indication is circumscribed with a red cursor. Your display should look something like the following illustration. Press the soft key BEACON INFO to show the DGPS reference station information. The higher the number the stronger the received signal. If noise is present at reception band width, the figure gets bigger. The higher the SN ratio the better the quality of the signal.
