It does this by utilizing the fact that an ultrasonic wave transmitted through water travels at a nearly constant speed of 4800 feet (1500 meters) per second. When a sound wave strikes an underwater object such as fish or sea bottom, part of the sound wave is reflected back toward the source (transducer). Thus by calculating the time difference between the transmission of a sound wave and the reception of the reflected sound wave, the depth to the object can be determined. Transmitter power is sent to the transducer as a short pulse of electrical energy. The electrical signal produced by the transmitter is converted into an ultrasonic signal by the transducer and transmitted into the water. Any returning signals from intervening objects (such as a fish school) are received by the transducer and converted into an electrical signal. The signals are then amplified in the amplifier section, and finally, displayed on screen. Each line represents a snapshot of what has occurred beneath the boat. A series of snapshots are accumulated side by side across the screen, and the resulting contours of the bottom and fish between the bottom and surface are displayed. To switch between these pictures, do the following: The lower the frequency of the pulse, the wider the detection area. Therefore, the 50 kHz frequency is useful for general detection and judging bottom condition. Therefore, the 200 kHz frequency is ideal for detailed observation of fish school. Press the soft key RETURN to close the window. The length of the segment is equal to one division of the depth scale. A bottom displayed with a short echo tail usually means it is a soft, sandy bottom. A long echo tail means a hard bottom. This mode is useful for bottom discrimination. It may be turned on in the DISPLAY SETUP2 menu.

    For further details see “ZOOM MARKER” on page 9-4. It is useful for estimating the kind of fish school and seabed composition. It is useful for searching fish schools at cruising speed. The width of the sounder display can be selected between standard (approx. 20 mm) and wide (approx. 40 mm). The sounder setup menu appears. See Figure 1-9. This display is useful for comparing the same picture with two different sounding frequencies. It works as follows. It jumps to one step shallower range when bottom echoes reach a half way point of the full scale from top and to one step deeper range when they come to the lower edge of scale. CRUISING is for tracking the bottom, and FISHING is for searching fish schools. CRUISING uses a higher clutter rejection setting than FISHING therefore it is not recommended for fish detection - weak fish echoes may be erased by the clutter suppression circuit. The basic range can be thought of as providing a “window” into the water column and range shifting as moving the “window” to the desired depth. Press the soft key RETURN to finish. Current level is shown above the bar. Press the RETURN key to finish. This can be done with the soft keys GAIN 50kHz and GAIN 200kHz. Use a higher gain setting for greater depths and a lower setting for shallow waters. Press the soft key RETURN to finish. The higher number the greater the degree of suppression. This is mainly due to dirty water or noise. This noise can be suppressed by adjusting CLUTTER on the SOUNDER SETUP OPTIONS menu. To suppress low level noise in manual sounder operation do the following: Note that weak echoes may not be displayed when the clutter circuit is on. These weak echoes may be erased as follows: The higher the number the stronger the echo will be erased. For example, you may want to display the bottom echo (red- dish-brown) in white to discriminate fish echoes near the bottom. Note that the bottom must be displayed in reddish-brown for the white marker to function.

    When you select 8 in HUE window (See page 2-9.), white marker is among 0 to 8. When selecting a picture advance speed, keep in mind that a fast advance speed will expand the size of the fish school horizontally on the screen and a slow advance speed will contract it. STOP freezes the display and it is convenient for observing an echo. To activate the bottom alarm the depth must be displayed. The WITHIN alarm sounds when the water temperature is within the range set; the WITHOUT alarm sounds when the water temperature is higher or lower than the range set. This alarm requires water temperature data. The offending alarm is displayed in red in the ALARM INFORMATION window. Press the soft key CLEAR ALARM to erase the alarm indication. The alarm icon remains displayed in red until all violated alarms have been acknowledged. The size of the fish school can be ascertained from the density of the display. This is because the echo travels between the bottom and the surface twice or more in shallow depths. The harder the bottom, the wider the trace. If the gain is set to show only a single bottom echo on mud, a rocky bottom will show a second or third bottom return. The range should be chosen so the first and second bottom echoes are displayed when bottom hardness is being determined. As surface turbulence is acoustically equivalent to running into a brick wall, the bottom echo will be displayed intermittently. Similar noise sometimes appears when a water temperature difference (thermocline) exists. Different species of fish tend to prefer different temperature zones, so the thermocline may be useful to help identify target fish. 200 kHz tends to show shallow thermoclines better than 50 kHz. This also occurs when the boat makes a quick turn or reverses movement. Lowering the picture advance speed may reduce the interruption. However, reconsideration of the transducer installation may be necessary if the interruption occurs frequently.

Cursor turned on Cursor position is displayed in latit ude and longitude or TDs (depending on menu setting) at the bot tom of the plot ter display when the cursor is on.Ship’s position, speed and course appear when the cursor is of f. Operate t he cursor pad to place t he cursor at an edg e of the screen. T he display shift s in the direct ion opposite to curs or pad operation. 2.4 Cente ring Ow n Ship’ s Posit ion W hen ow n ship track s of f t he plotter display, the own ship mark is aut omatically retur ned to the screen cent er. For distance, a short er interval provides bett er reconstruction of the t rack, but the stor age time of the track is reduced. OFF: T rack is neit her recorded nor plotted. T his sett ing is usef ul when you do not need to recor d track, f or example, when returning t o port.

    A dashed line runs between the start ing point and all route waypoints. Next destination waypoint is show n in reverse video. The destinat ion waypoint is automatically switched when the boat enters the arr ival alarm rang e or the boat passes an imaginar y perpendicular line passing throug h the center of t he destination waypoint.     Although t he W GS-84 system, the G PS standard, is now widely used other categories of char ts still exist. Choose t he chart system used, not the ar ea where your boat is sailing.TD1 and ? TD2 to r efine posit ion accuracy.This chang e can be reduced by smoothing the raw GPS f ixes. The setting range is f rom 0 ( no smoothing ) to 999 seconds. The hig her the set ting the m ore smoothed the r aw data, however too high a setting slows response time t o change in latitude and long itude. T his is especially noticeable at hig h ship’s speeds. “0” is t he normal sett ing; incr ease the setting if the GPS f ix changes great ly. T he raw velocity data may changes randomly depending on receiving conditions and other fact ors. You can reduce this random variation by increasing t he smoothing. Like with latit ude and longitude sm oothing, the higher the speed and course smoothing the more smoothed the r aw data. If the setting is too high, however, the response t o speed and course change slows. The set ting rang e is fr om 0 (no smoot hing) to 9999 seconds. A VR. SPEED (Speed averaging) Calculation of ETA and T TG, etc.If the period is too long or too shor t, calculat ion error will result. Change t his setting if calculation error occurs. T he default setting is 60 seconds. The set ting rang e is f rom 0 (no averaging) to 9999 seconds. DISA BLE SV Every GPS satellite is broadcast ing abnorm al satellite number (s) in it s Almanac, which contains gener al orbital dat a about all GPS satellites. Using this inf or mation, t he GPS receiver automat ically eliminates any malf unctioning sat ellite f rom the GPS sate llite schedule. However, the Almanac sometim es may not contain this inf orm ation. You can disable an inoperative satellite m anually. To rest ore a satellit e enter “00”. T o rest ore a satellite, enter “ 000”. The display now looks somet hing lik e the one shown below.
